Meet Your Virtual Therapist
Melodi Wilkie, LCPC
I know how difficult it can be to reach out to a therapist — I've been there! With a decade of experience in the mental health field, I've cultivated an approach that just might work for you. It's all about connection. Connection between therapist and client, connection between mind and body, connection between your authentic Self and and all of the various ways in which you show up in the world. I have completed Internal Family Systems Level 1 training and love incorporating IFS into my work with clients. IFS is a holistic and evidence-based approach to healing. Together, we can create a safe space to explore what’s on your mind and heart.
My goal is to empower YOU to be the expert of your mental well-being.
Benefits of Virtual Therapy
-
Effectiveness
Research shows that virtual therapy is just as effective as sitting in an office across from your therapist. The Telebehavioral Health Institute has comprised a bibliography of over 20 studies that have assessed effectiveness among various populations.
-
Connection
We find connection in so many ways online — from virtual happy hours with friends to dating to wishing grandma a happy birthday over Zoom. You can establish a therapeutic connection with a therapist in the same manner. And there's no need to hide our facial expressions with a mask!
-
Convenience
Save time not having to drive to your therapists office. Save on gas money too! No need to sit in a waiting room. You can attend a therapy session from the comfort of your own home. Your dog might even want to join, and that is completely fine by me. Or sit outside on your deck and enjoy the sunshine (as long as you have privacy).
-
Safety
No need to feel anxious about the possibility of contracting COIVD-19 from your therapist. This is a wonderful option for those who may be immunocompromised. Also, when the winter weather comes, we will be able to have our appointments without having to worry about the condition of the roads! If you catch a cold but really need a therapy session, we can still make it happen!
-
Accessibility
According to the Department of Health & Human Services, as of April 2021 there are 16 counties in Maryland that are designated as Mental Health Professional Shortage Areas. Virtual therapy makes mental health services accessible to those who may not be able to find services elsewhere. Everyone who wants or needs mental health services deserves access to them, regardless of where they live.
-
Continuity of Care
Should you move from one place in Maryland to another, there's no need to find a new therapist. Let's say you're a college student who goes to UMD at College Park but lives with your parents on the eastern shore during summers. As long as you are in the state of Maryland, we can continue your therapy. No need to stop your treatment or search for a new therapist.
"Mental health treatment via telehealth is here to stay, and may even increase in use post-Covid-19."
“People are needing therapy more than ever before. There has been a significant increase in anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts in the months since the pandemic, according to a Centers for Disease Control study. The greatest increase was found in those aged 18-24. In addition to anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts, there has been an increase in substance abuse and domestic violence. For those who cannot leave their homes or choose not to risk virus exposure by venturing out, counseling via telehealth has provided a much-needed service.”
